B1G Power Rankings after Week 7: Michigan, Iowa soar after impressive wins
This might’ve been the most entertaining weekend of B1G football we’ve had yet.
Minnesota went toe-to-toe with No. 3 Ohio State for three quarters, Northwestern pulled off a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Nebraska and Michigan State stunned the college football world with a 21-17 upset over No. 8 Penn State.
There was a little something for everyone in Week 7. That also means we’ve got some serious changes in this week’s power rankings.
Surely you’ll all agree with this order, right?
14. Rutgers (lost to Maryland 34-7)
It’s getting really difficult to understand how a Power Five program can be this bad. Rutgers threw five interceptions, had just two completions and had eight total passing yards against Maryland. This program isn’t making improvements, it’s getting worse every week.
13. Nebraska (lost to Northwestern 34-31)
So close. So, so, so close. Nebraska had a 10-point lead with under six minutes to play in the fourth quarter and still found a way to lose. The 0-6 start is the worst in program history. At least Nebraska isn’t Rutgers, right?
12. Illinois (lost to Purdue 46-7)
This was a disappointing weekend for Lovie Smith and the Illini. They had made so many improvements and had been competitive, even in some tough losses. But Purdue just overpowered Illinois. The defense was just no match.
11. Minnesota (lost to No. 3 Ohio State 30-14)
Minnesota lost by 16 points but it might’ve been the team’s most impressive outing of the year. The Gophers played Ohio State well for most of the game but just didn’t have the talent to keep up. A few questionable calls didn’t go their way, either.
10. Indiana (lost to Iowa 42-16)
Another B1G team with a disappointing outing. After playing Ohio State tough a week ago, Indiana should’ve been able to give Iowa some kind of fight. But the Hoosiers rolled over, at least that’s how it looked. I’m guessing it’s going to be an intense week of practice for Tom Allen’s bunch.
9. Maryland (def. Rutgers 34-7)
Unfortunately it’s really difficult to judge a team after playing Rutgers. Maryland was impressive, but who isn’t against the Scarlet Knights? Kudos to Ty Johnson, who eclipsed the 4,000-yard mark in his career after rushing for 132 yards and a touchdown on nine carries Saturday.
8. Purdue (def. Illinois 46-7)
The Boilers played spoilers (bad joke, I know) at Illinois’ Homecoming. The Purdue offense was unstoppable once again, even for a defense known as one of the most opportunistic in the B1G. The defense showed up, too.
7. Northwestern (def. Nebraska 34-31)
How? Just how? A 10-point deficit for most Northwestern teams is a guaranteed loss. But Clayton Thorson was able to rally the troops and lead a pair of scoring drives late in the game, including an eight-play, 99-yard game-tying touchdown drive, to send the contest to overtime. They don’t call them the “Cardiac Cats” for nothing.
6. Penn State (lost to Michigan State 21-17)
Well, it didn’t take long for Penn State to be bounced from the B1G East and College Football Playoff race. For the second straight year, the Nittany Lions dropped back-to-back games to Ohio State and Michigan State. Just a very flat performance out of Penn State this weekend.
5. Michigan State (def. No. 8 Penn State 21-17)
I’m honestly not sure whether Spartan fans are happy about the win or more aggravated with the fact they dropped games to Arizona State and Northwestern. Maybe both? This was an impressive win for Michigan State and it keeps Mark Dantonio’s crew right in the thick of the B1G East race for now.
4. Wisconsin (lost to No. 12 Michigan 38-13)
A 38-13 loss is probably the lowest moment in the Paul Chryst era at Wisconsin, not that there’s been a lot. The Badgers couldn’t throw the football, as Alex Hornibrook completed just 7-of-20 passes for 100 yards with two interceptions. The Badgers now have a B1G loss with plenty of tough games ahead.
3. Iowa (def. Indiana 42-16)
Give me T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant over any other tight end combination in college football. Maybe pro football, too. The two tight ends were dominant, combining for over 200 receiving yards and three touchdowns in the win. Nate Stanley also had six touchdown passes. When the Hawkeyes offense is rolling, it’s a threat to anyone in the B1G.
2. Michigan (def. No. 15 Wisconsin 38-13)
OK, it’s officially time to start buying into Michigan in 2018. The stench from the Notre Dame loss in Week 1 has evaporated after bullying Wisconsin in a way the Badgers never experience. The Wolverines have an elite defense, a quality offensive line and a star running back in Karan Higdon. Oh, and there’s that Shea Patterson guy at quarterback. He’s pretty good, too.
1. Ohio State (def. Minnesota 30-14)
The Buckeyes have been playing with fire the last two weeks but have avoided getting burnt. Even with substantial injuries on the defensive end, you’d think Ohio State could’ve made quick work out of the Gophers. Instead, Minnesota hung around for most of the afternoon. Ohio State is 7-0, but it can’t continue to play so poorly in the first half.
