Ranking B1G QBs after Week 5: Dillon Gabriel keeps Ducks unbeaten
Week 5 in the Big Ten saw Dillon Gabriel continue to move up the record books, Kurtis Rourke keep Indiana unbeaten and Miller Moss rally USC from a slow start.
Meanwhile, Northwestern’s offense continues to sputter no matter who is at QB …
Let’s check in on each B1G QB heading into Week 6:
18. Jack Lausch, Northwestern
The Wildcats have proven to be offensively inept. Lausch was just 8-of-27 passing for 53 yards with 2 interceptions in the team’s 24-5 road loss to Washington. Northwestern has been held under 300 total yards in both of its games against Power 4 teams (Duke and Washington). David Braun’s team hosts Indiana this week, and it could get ugly as Hoosiers quarterback Kurtis Rourke leads the B1G’s highest scoring offense (48.8, tied with Ohio State).
17. Ethan Garbers, UCLA
It was another rough week for Garbers, who went 12-of-20 for 118 yards with 2 interceptions in a 34-13 loss to Oregon at the Rose Bowl. The senior was sacked 4 times and left the game during the 4th quarter with an apparent ankle injury. Coach DeShaun Foster said Garbers, who was sidelined for the final 9 minutes, told him he expected to play against Penn State this week.
16. Braedyn Locke, Wisconsin
Locke went 13-of-26 for 180 yards in a loss to USC in his first start of the year after Tyler Van Dyke tore a knee ligament early in the team’s setback against Alabama 2 weeks ago. He threw an early 63-yard scoring pass to Vinny Anthony, but Wisconsin managed only 82 yards while getting shut out after halftime. The Badgers finished with only 286 total yards against the Trojans.
15. Hudson Card, Purdue
In a 28-10 home loss to Nebraska, Card was 18-of-25 passing for 174 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown to Leland Smith. The Boilermakers next play at Wisconsin, and they’ll have a new offensive coordinator when they do so. Purdue fired Graham Harrell, who was the first significant hire for head coach Ryan Walters in 2022. After opening with 49 points against Indiana State, Purdue has scored only 38 total points in losses to Notre Dame, Oregon State and Nebraska. Card has only thrown 7 TD passes, which is tied for 10th in the B1G.
14. Aidan Chiles, Michigan State
It has been a very uneven year for the Oregon State transfer, who has thrown 5 TD passes against 8 interceptions. In Sparty’s 38-7 loss to Ohio State, Chiles was 13-of-19 for 167 yards with a 12-yard touchdown pass, but he also threw an interception. The offense made several plays to get into the red zone, but Chiles was stopped on a 4th-down sneak on one possession and fumbled at the Ohio State 16 on another. Michigan State entered the game with 10 turnovers in 4 games and added 3 more against the Buckeyes. Another difficult test awaits this week as the Spartans travel to Eugene to take on Oregon on Friday night.
13. Alex Orji, Michigan
Somehow, some way the Wolverines are making it work offensively. Orji completed 10-of-18 passes for just 86 yards in a 27-24 win in the rain against Minnesota last week. Kalel Mullings was the difference for this offense again as the Wolverines claimed the Little Brown Jug. Orji threw 1 touchdown pass, but his interception — his 1st this season — helped spur Minnesota’s 4th-quarter comeback.
12. Cade McNamara, Iowa
The Hawkeyes were idle last weekend after beating Minnesota 31-14 in Week 4. But the passing game was fairly stagnant, as McNamara finished 11-of-19 for just 62 yards and had trouble getting into a rhythm. The Hawkeyes relied on the legs of Kaleb Johnson, who rushed for a career-high 206 yards and 3 touchdowns. McNamara has only thrown 3 TD passes through 4 games. Iowa plays at Ohio State this week, and the Hawkeyes last won at Ohio Stadium in 1991.
11. Athan Kaliakmanis, Rutgers
In a 21-18 home win over Washington last Friday night, Kaliakmanis went 14-of-24 for 115 yards. The numbers were pedestrian, but the Scarlet Knights were able to lean on the legs once again of Kyle Monangai, who ran for 132 yards and a touchdown. Kalaikmanis has thrown 7 TD passes against just 1 INT thus far. Ball security is one reason Rutgers is 4-0 for the first time since 2012, but more may be needed this week from Kaliakmanis when he matches up with Dylan Raiola at Nebraska.
10. Max Brosmer, Minnesota
The 6th-year transfer from New Hampshire went 27-of-40 for 258 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a 27-24 loss to Michigan in the battle for the Little Brown Jug. He helped spur a comeback effort against the Wolverines that just fell short. Despite the loss, he has given the Golden Gophers their best passing attack under PJ Fleck since 2019.
9. Billy Edwards Jr., Maryland
Maryland suffered its first loss to Indiana since 2020 last week despite getting 3 scoring passes from Edwards Jr., who was 26-of-41 for 289 yards. How now shares the B1G lead with 11 TD passes and leads the league in passing yards (1,444). He played well when he had time to throw, but he was under duress a lot and sacked 5 times. He also lost his top two receivers, Tai Felton and Kaden Prather, in the loss.
8. Dylan Raiola, Nebraska
Raiola threw for 257 yards and a touchdown to lead Nebraska to a 28-10 victory over Purdue last week. It was an ugly first half offensively for the Cornhuskers, who may have been suffering a hangover from their disappointing home overtime loss to Illinois. But the ground game started to gain traction in the second half and the Cornhuskers scored 28 unanswered points to pull away. Raiola leads all Power 4 true freshmen with 9 TD passes.
7. Will Rogers, Washington
The Mississippi State transfer was 26-of-36 for 306 yards and 2 touchdowns in Washington’s 21-18 loss to Rutgers. The leading active FBS quarterback in career passing attempts, completions and completion percentage helped spur an offense that racked up 521 yards, but the Huskies missed 3 field goals, were penalized 6 times for 69 yards and went 2-for-12 on 3rd down. U-Dub hosts defending national champion Michigan this week.
Rogers is the only Power conference quarterback in the country with at least 10 TD passes and 0 interceptions.
6. Kurtis Rourke, Indiana
The Hoosiers improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1967 with a 42-28 victory over Maryland last week. Rourke threw for a season-high 359 yards and 3 touchdowns, and the offense overcame 4 turnovers — their first 4 all season — to top the 30-point mark for the 5th straight game. Rourke shares the B1G lead with 11 TD passes.
5. Will Howard, Ohio State
The Kansas State transfer, who was briefly knocked out of the game in the first half, completed 21-of-31 passes for 244 yards in a 38-7 win over Michigan State last week. He had a 3-yard touchdown pass to Gee Scott in the first quarter and a 33-yard touchdown pass to Emeka Egbuka to convert a 4th-and-5 late in the third quarter. Ohio State hosts Iowa this Saturday.
Howard has thrown 8 TD passes this season. Not bad, but former OSU starter Kyle McCord is tied for 4th nationally with 14 for Syracuse.
4. Miller Moss, USC
The Trojans rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to beat Wisconsin 38-21. Moss threw 2 of his 3 touchdown passes to Ja’Kobi Lane, and the Trojans outscored the Badgers 28-0 in the second half for the school’s first B1G victory one week after narrowly losing its league debut at Michigan. Moss was evaluated for a concussion after a 7-yard rushing touchdown on a 4th-down keeper midway through the 4th quarter, but he stayed in the game. USC plays at Minnesota this Saturday.
Moss leads the B1G in passing yards per game (299.5).
3. Luke Altmyer, Illinois
Altmyer’s first season in Champaign didn’t go exactly as planned, but it looks like the offseason did wonders for him as he has developed much more chemistry with his receivers and seemingly has a much better grasp on the playbook. He shares the B1G lead with 11 TD passes. He couldn’t lead Illinois to a road upset of Penn State last week, though, going 16-of-25 for 185 yards with a touchdown and his first interception of the season. After scoring easily on its opening drive, the Fighting Illini managed just 25 rushing yards the rest of the way. The Illini were dominated behind the line of scrimmage, and the O-Line allowed seven sacks. Illinois next hosts Purdue on Oct. 12.
2. Drew Allar, Penn State
Allar’s development under new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki has been one of the biggest reasons for the team’s success, but Illinois made life a little more difficult last week in the Nittany Lions’ win. But Allar limited his mistakes and relied on Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton, who combined for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns on 34 carries.
Penn State hasn’t asked Allar to carry the offense yet — he’s averaging just 19.5 passes per game; 16 other B1G QBs are throwing more. But he has maximized his opportunities. He is averaging 10.9 yards per attempt — the best in the B1G.
1. Dillon Gabriel, Oregon
Gabriel threw 3 more scoring passes as the Ducks beats UCLA 34-13 in their first B1G game. Gabriel, who completed 31-of-41 passes for 280 yards, became the 4th FBS player to reach 16,000 yards passing for his career and moved into a 3-way tie for 3rd with 134 touchdown passes. His lone mistake came late in the second quarter when Bryan Addison had a 96-yard pick-6.
Gabriel is 2nd in the B1G in passing yards per game (298.0) and leads the B1G in TD passes per game (2.25; 9 in 4 games).
Oregon welcomes Michigan State Friday night in the Ducks’ first conference home game.
