Week 10 gave us some old-school Big Ten football.

Ohio State and Penn State had a physical battle in State College, a clash James Franklin lost — again.

Meanwhile, Indiana remains unbeaten and Minnesota is starting to cook.

What’s in store for Week 11? Let’s take a look at the B1G’s biggest storylines …

Indiana eyeing history ahead of Michigan showdown

Indiana jumped to No. 8 in the AP poll after pummeling Michigan State 47-10. The Hoosiers rose to No. 7 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, but they hadn’t been inside the top 10 in a full season since climbing to No. 4 their 1967 Rose Bowl season.

Next up? A home showdown against Michigan, with a chance to get to 10-0. That would be historic; Indiana has never won 10 games in any season.

Michigan owns the series — IU won the 2020 matchup but hasn’t beaten UM in a full season since 1987 — but history won’t help these Wolverines contain these Hoosiers on Saturday.

In Week 10, Kurtis Rourke threw for 263 yards and 4 touchdowns, and Amare Ferrell had 2 interceptions to lead the Hoosiers to a 47-10 road victory over Michigan State and their first 9-0 start in school history. Rourke, who had surgery on an injured right thumb and missed last week’s win over Washington, completed 19-of-29 passes. This is only the 3rd season in Indiana history in which the Hoosiers have won 9 games. It’s been an absolute dream season. Meanwhile, the Wolverines could not hang with top-ranked Oregon in Ann Arbor, falling 38-17. The defending national champions gave up 304 total yards in the first half and was down 28-10 at halftime. The Wolverines had a chance to get within a touchdown midway through the 4th quarter, but they turned it over on downs at the Ducks 10 on a trick play. The bottom line: Michigan doesn’t have the offensive firepower to keep up with IU.

The boat is being rowed

Red-hot Minnesota (6-3) will go on the road to battle Rutgers, and it’ll be riding high after rallying for a 27-25 victory at Illinois — its 4th straight W this season. Max Brosmer completed 22-of-37 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown, Darius Taylor ran for 131 yards and a score on 22 carries and Dragan Kesich kicked 4 field goals. Minnesota hasn’t lost since falling to Michigan in September. The pass defense has been amazing; the Golden Gophers have only allowed 6 scoring passes this season. Meanwhile, Rutgers is coming off a bye. The last time Greg Schiano’s team took the field it lost at USC 42-20. It was the 4th straight loss for the Scarlet Knights, who have allowed 119 points over their past 3 games. This Gophers team is trending in the right direction and hopes to take care of business against an inferior opponent.

Can No. 6 Penn State bounce back?

James Franklin fell to 1-10 against Ohio State with the loss this past weekend, and the Nittany Lions saw their hopes of reaching the Big Ten championship take a major hit. They are still in the mix for the expanded College Football Playoff, but style points will be key moving forward. The new-look offense under coordinator Andy Kotelnicki was not very successful in Buckeyes territory, and this week it’ll host a Washington squad coming off a win over old Pac-12 rival USC. Jonah Coleman ran for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the Huskies held off a second-half rally by USC for a 26-21 victory to snap a 2-game losing streak. Will Rogers threw for 262 yards as U-Dub extended its winning streak at home to 19. This will be a challenge for the PSU defense.

Other notable B1G nuggets

Iowa at UCLA (Friday, 8 pm CT, FOX): Kaleb Johnson rushed for 135 yards and 3 touchdowns and quarterback Brendan Sullivan rushed for a score and threw for 1 as the Hawkeyes easily handled Wisconsin 42-10. The Hawkeyes rushed for 329 yards, and Johnson had his 7th game of 100 or more rushing yards. His 20 touchdowns this season have tied Shonn Greene for the program’s single-season scoring record. Kirk Ferentz’s squad has new life after a 32-20 road loss to Michigan State on Oct. 19. Meanwhile, Ethan Garbers threw for 2 touchdowns and linebacker Kain Medrano returned an interception for a touchdown to start the second half to help the Bruins beat Nebraska on the road this past Saturday. UCLA has won consecutive games for the first time under first-year coach DeShaun Foster following a 1-5 start.

Purdue at No. 3 Ohio State: The Buckeyes won a physical battle 20-13 in Happy Valley this past weekend, milking the clock in the final 5:13 to keep their B1G title hopes alive. The defense made things difficult for Drew Allar and Co. as well, including a goal-line stop from inside the 3 late in the 4th quarter. The Buckeyes have now beaten the Nittany Lions 8 consecutive times. Up next are the Boilermakers, who have not won in Columbus since 1988. Purdue suffered a home loss to Northwestern, which saw Joseph Himon II score on a 22-yard catch for a 26-20 win 2 plays after the Boilermakers passed up the chance for a go-ahead field goal, failing to convert on 4th-and-6 from the 21-yard line. It’s the second time in 3 games the 1-win Boilermakers have lost in overtime. They failed to convert a 2-point conversion in an overtime loss at Illinois on Oct. 12. The Boilermakers have lost 7 straight, their longest skid since 2016.

Maryland at No. 1 Oregon: The Ducks have defeated B1G stalwarts Ohio State and Michigan in its debut season in the league. Dillon Gabriel threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score as one of the Heisman Trophy frontrunners helped lead a 38-17 win over Michigan on the road this past Saturday. Jordan James provided balance by running for 117 yards and a touchdown, but No. 1 receiver and punt returner Tez Johnson went down with an apparent shoulder injury in the first quarter. That would be a brutal blow if he is out long term. Meanwhile, Maryland was off this past weekend. The last time we saw the Terrapins they gave up 3 first-quarter touchdowns en route to falling to Minnesota 48-23. The Gophers scored their most points in a conference game since beating the Terrapins 52-10 in 2019. Mike Locksley’s squad has lost 3-of-4. While the passing game has been impressive, more balance is needed.
