It’s never too early to start forecasting next season’s College Football Playoff field. Some teams are considered to have a much better chance at competing for a national championship than others.

Recently, ESPN released its preseason Football Power Index (FPI), ranking every team at the FBS level. Along with those rankings were percentages given for every team’s chance to reach the College Football Playoff at the end of the year.

We’re taking a look at the B1G teams with the best chance to earn a spot in the four-team field at the end of the 2021 season.

Ohio State leads the way for the B1G with a 45% chance to make the field. Next in line is Penn State, but the percentage is much lower, listed at just 7.3%. Here’s a look at the percentages for the six B1G teams ESPN’s FPI believes has a chance:

  • Ohio State Buckeyes — 45%
  • Penn State Nittany Lions — 7.3%
  • Wisconsin Badgers — 4.4%
  • Iowa Hawkeyes — 0.5%
  • Indiana Hoosiers — 0.3%
  • Northwestern Wildcats — 0.2%

The other eight teams are listed at 0% to reach the College Football Playoff.

Ohio State has reached the field each of the last two seasons and is one of only two B1G teams every to compete in the four-team bracket. Michigan State earned a bid in 2015, as well.
