The B1G has announced how it will honor former B1G commissioner Jim Delany, as well as his wife Kitty.

On Sunday, the conference announced that the league’s trophies for the Most Outstanding Player in the B1G Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament will be renamed the “Jim and Kitty Delany Most Outstanding Player” award. The women’s tournament concludes on Sunday while the men’s kicks off on Wednesday, March 11.

Jim Delany served as the B1G commissioner from 1989-2020. He stepped down from his post on January 1, 2020, after 30 years of service. Kevin Warren took over the duties as the conference commissioner.

“For more than 30 years, Jim and Kitty Delany have been synonymous with the Big Ten Conference” Warren said in a statement. “The lifelong involvement of both Jim and Kitty with the game of basketball and their tireless advocacy on behalf of students created the perfect opportunity for us to place their names on the trophies for the most outstanding players in both the Big Ten Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournaments. This is an appropriate honor for Jim and Kitty by placing their names on these awards and welcoming local educators to our event.”

In addition to renaming the trophies, the B1G will be awarding four all-session tickets to the men’s tournament to outstanding teachers in the Indianapolis area.
