BCS vs CFP: Here's how the initial CFP Rankings would look using the BCS formula
The Bowl Championship Series is a thing of the past, but the formula still lives on.
The analysts at BCS Know How continue to run BCS simulations. Though they have no bearing on the College Football Playoff Rankings, it is always interesting to see how the BCS would stack up to the current season.
Following the unveiling of the initial CFP Rankings, BCS Know How released how the Top 16 would look on each system. The Committee and Simulated BCS agree on the top three teams, including Ohio State ahead of LSU at No. 1. The difference in the top four is that the BCS would have Clemson at No. 4 while the CFP Committee went with Penn State.
The biggest discrepancies between the two rankings dealt with Minnesota, Cincinnati, and Wisconsin. Wisconsin checked in at No. 13 on the CFP Rankings, but the Badgers would not make the top 16 of the BCS.
For Cincinnati and Minnesota, they would both be ranked higher on the BCS. The undefeated Gophers checked in at No. 17 on the CFP but they would be No. 13 on the BCS. For the Bearcats, they were No. 20 on the CFP but would be No. 15 on the BCS.
Here’s the side-by-side comparison:
