Big Ten basketball: Michigan, Indiana shake up standings with key wins
Big Ten basketball is in the middle of an elite title race, and the standings received another shakeup on Tuesday night. Those results leave 5 teams either leading the Big Ten or within 2.5 games of the lead with 7 games left to play.
To kickstart Tuesday evening, Purdue and Michigan met in a dramatic top-20 affair in Ann Arbor. The game came down the final buzzer but it was the Wolverines hanging on for the 75-73 win, giving Dusty May his first top-10 victory with Michigan.
Danny Wolf led the Wolverines with 15 points and 9 rebounds in the win while Vladislav Goldin and Tre Donaldson both chipped in 12 points. Braden Smith led all scorers with 24 points for the Boilermakers while Trey Kaufman-Renn added 22 points.
The win by Michigan snaps Purdue’s winning streak at 4 games and gives the Wolverines the current longest streak in the B1G at 5 games. It’s also a bit of payback after a blowout loss at the hands of Purdue in West Lafayette.
The victory also pushed Michigan into sole possession of first place in the B1G at 11-2 in conference play. Purdue falls into 2nd place and half a game off the lead at 11-3.
Later Tuesday evening, Michigan State faced Indiana with a lot on the line. The Spartans were trying to give Tom Izzo the all-time B1G wins record (breaking a tie with legendary IU coach Bob Knight), but the Hoosiers had other plans.
After MSU raced out to a 20-8 lead in the first half, Indiana responded with a massive run, outscoring the Spartans 24-9 to enter the break with a lead. Malik Reneau then exploded with 16 2nd-half points in a 71-67 upset in East Lansing to spoil the party.
Reneau’s 19 total points off the IU bench led all scorers with Oumar Ballo delivering 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double and Luke Goode chipping in 10. Jaden Akins led the Spartans with 14 points while Jase Richardson chipped in 13 and Frankie Fidler added 12 but it was another disappointing outing for Izzo’s group.
Playing at home, the Spartans shot just 17.4% (4-for-23) from 3-point range in defeat. Michigan State is now 1-3 in its last 4 games since starting off league play 9-0. This loss stings not only for Michigan State to get the record for Izzo, but the Spartans were also playing for a share of first place in the B1G after Michigan’s win over Purdue.
Instead, MSU resides 1 game back in the standings entering an intense stretch that includes games at Illinois, vs. Purdue, vs. Michigan, at Maryland and vs. Wisconsin. The potential is still there, but there’s a reason why the Spartans have fallen to +450 to win the league title at bet365.
Michigan is the new favorite to capture the league title and checks in at +115 while Purdue is listed at +155. Track all the odds and get in on the action with Tradition’s Michigan online sports betting options.
As for the rest of the contenders, UCLA entered Tuesday night with a golden opportunity to come out of things just 1.5 games behind the top of the standings. But the Bruins could not contain Illini star Kasparas Jakucionis down the stretch in an 83-78 win for Illinois that pushed UCLA to 2.5 games back (9-5 in the B1G) moving forward.
Wisconsin is also still alive in this race at 9-4 and just 2 games behind Michigan. The Badgers will not play until Saturday at Purdue, a game Wisconsin will certainly need to win to remain in the race heading toward the final stretch of February.
