Big Ten basketball is having another solid campaign overall, but you wouldn’t know it by what transpired Monday night in Lincoln, Nebraska.

In that game, No. 15 Michigan and Nebraska — somehow — failed to crack 100 combined points in the final score. The Wolverines were able to hold on for the 49-46 win, avoiding back-to-back losses and a horrendous upset on the road, but it was far from a performance that will leave anyone feeling good.

According to ESPN, it is the lowest point total Michigan has scored in a win in 17 years! The Wolverines also scored 49 points in a 2008 win over Illinois.

While a team winning a game while scoring less than 50 points might seem rare, it has become a semi-regular occurrence in the Big Ten. While it is the first instance since 2022 when Rutgers beat Iowa, 48-46, it is the 18th overall occurrence since the 2002-03 season. Penn State actually has 2 wins in that time period while scoring less than 40 points.

For some added context, SEC basketball teams produced 5 halves of 49+ points across this past Saturday’s action. And 3 SEC teams — Arkansas, Oklahoma and Alabama — scored 90 points by themselves while the Crimson Tide had the day-high mark in the conference with 96 points in a win over Kentucky.

The full numbers from Nebraska vs. Michigan also read like a horror novel. The two teams produced 25 combined turnovers with just 17 total assists in the game.

Michigan shot 30% (rounded up from 29.5%) for the lowest shooting performance of the season for the Wolverines. Nebraska was even worse at 26% from the field. That is the worst shooting effort for the Huskers since shooting 21.1% in a 2019 home loss to Maryland.

While Michigan is now back tied atop the Big Ten standings with Michigan State, it is interesting that the Wolverines have a rivalry loss to the Spartans and this dud vs. the Huskers in their first two games since signing Dusty May to a long-term extension. The head coach is in his first season with the program and has turned things around, but there is plenty for the team to fix ahead of the Big Ten Tournament.
