There are a couple of teams that might earn a mention when discussing which B1G squads present the biggest challenges to Ohio State in the conference this season. Kirk Herbstreit was the latest analyst to weigh in.

A handful of teams — Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota — often get recognition as teams that can compete with the Buckeyes this season, or at least are the best candidates to do so. Herbstreit is in that camp, but explained who he think poses the biggest threat to Ohio State.

“I like Penn State. I think James Franklin has done a really good job, going back to the recruiting aspect of things,” Herbstreit said on the CFB Podcast with Herbie, Pollack and Negandhi Show. “They lose pretty-good personnel, and they’re able to replace them. Ohio State goes there next week, not your traditional White Out and all of that but still, that game always seems to be competitive. Penn State is a team. Wisconsin, with the Jack Coan injury, you just don’t know how long he’ll be out. That’s a significant loss, potentially, for that offense.”

Penn State is coming off an 11-2 year in 2019 and gave Ohio State one of the biggest challenges it faced all season. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nittany Lions lose a huge home-field advantage by not having any fans in attendance for the Oct. 31 showdown in Happy Valley.

Still, the Lions are the most competitive team from a talent and coaching standpoint heading into the season. Yes, even with star running back Journey Brown potentially out for the season, PSU will get a shot to dethrone the Bucks.

It’s going to be a major game with significant implications on the line in State College on Halloween night.
