Few rookies have replicated their on-the-field success from their final year of college football in their first year of playing in the NFL quite like Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has.

Nix was named a team captain for the Broncos as head coach Sean Payton announced Wednesday, joining the likes of wide receiver Courtland Sutton, guard Quinn Meinerz, cornerback Pat Surtain II, inside linebacker Alex Singleton and kicker Wil Lutz. All were selected by their teammates.

Earning this honor is historic on Nix’s part, given that he is the first rookie season captain since Hall of Famer Floyd Little achieved the title back in 1967.

Nix beat out fellow former Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham for the starting gig this preseason, making him the first rookie quarterback to start for the Broncos in a season-opener since John Elway.

“Obviously Bo is tremendously talented,” Elway told KUSA. “He’s played a lot of college football so he’s ahead of the curve when it comes to that. … He’s going to have his ups and downs as a young guy, which I had plenty of those, but he’s got all of the talent and the will and the mind strength to be able to do it.”

Nix and the Broncos will face their first real test of the year on Sunday when they open up the season against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. They take on the Seahawks on the road at Lumen Field. Kickoff is set for 4:05 p.m. ET.
