CBS Sports says 3 B1G coaches are on the hot seat
The first month of the college football season has come and gone. Naturally, that means it’s time to revisit the coaching carousel and determine who has overperformed and who has underwhelmed.
CBS Sports took a look at the six college football coaches who are on the hot seat as we approach the midway point of the season, three of which come from the B1G. And one of the names is really surprising.
Here are the names of the six coaches who are on the hot seat, with the B1G names in bold:
- Chris Ash, Rutgers
- DJ Durkin, Maryland
- Larry Fedora, North Carolina
- Urban Meyer, Ohio State
- Bobby Petrino, Louisville
- Bill Snyder, Kansas State
Obviously, Meyer is the surprising candidate here. But it’s more about what happened off the field than the performance on the gridiron. Still, after only serving a three-game suspension following the scandal at Ohio State, it seems unlikely Meyer would lose his job.
Here’s what CBS Sports had to say on Meyer:
Before the Courtney Smith allegations in late July, Meyer was untouchable. Not so much now, at least in terms of these ratings. His job was a point of discussion while he was suspended and put on leave. A trustee resigned when he thought Meyer’s suspension wasn’t enough. Since returning, a report surfaced there had been discussions to make interim coach Ryan Day the coach-in-waiting.
Ohio State football has always been greater than the Ohio State coach. Ask Woody Hayes and Jim Tressel.
Durkin is another coach battling off-the-field issues following the death of Jordan McNair. An investigation into a “toxic culture” is still ongoing, and the results of the probe will likely determine his fate.
The only B1G coach on the list because of football stuff is Ash. With a 1-4 record and blowout losses to Kansas and Buffalo, frustration is building in Piscataway.
