Expanding the College Football Playoff has been a major topic of conversation over the last few weeks. While the discussion has” always been around, this year’s debate between Oklahoma, Ohio State and Georgia prompted much more meaningful debate.
Don’t expect things to change anytime soon, though. At least not if you ask executive director Bill Hancock. On Saturday, Hancock was asked about the possibility of expansion, and he doesn’t believe there will be any changes coming in the near future.
According to AL.com, Hancock said commissioners are in favor of making the College Football Playoff better, but that the four-team system is still very popular.
“I don’t see it,” Hancock said. “The four-team playoff format is extremely popular.”
“The commissioners said it wouldn’t be a bad idea to talk about seeing if we can make this great thing even greater. And that’s all the feedback I’m getting. It might be a good time to think about making it better.”
The idea of expansion has also gained popularity as Clemson and Alabama are set to square off in the College Football Playoff for a fourth straight season. It’s the third time the two teams have met in the title game, with each team winning once.
Some fans are clamoring that “Clemson-Alabama fatigue” is setting in, and hurting the sport. An expanded playoff hardly means that kind of situation would end, though.
Clemson and Alabama will meet on Monday Night in Santa Clara for the national title.
