The College Football Playoff is not expanding any time soon.

That is per a Friday report from Nicole Auerbach with The Athletic. According to Auerbach’s report, the CFP has decided against expanding during the current contract.

That means the CFP will remain at 4 teams through 2025 with the 2026 season the earliest the Playoff may expand.

Executive Director Bill Hancock confirmed that report with a press release announcing the 4-team format will remain for at least 4 more seasons. Discussion surrounding expansion will continue but will be aimed at implementing a new format beginning in the 2026-27 season.
