The College Football Playoff is headed to B1G country in 2022.

On Wednesday, a release from the College Football Playoff listed host sites for the national championship game for years 2021 through 2024, which included a trip up north to Indianapolis in 2022.

Other host cities included Miami, Los Angeles and Houston.

College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock talked about the decision to expand into the northern part of the country, a decision he said he is pleased with.

“When we were talking about sites, we kept asking ourselves, ‘Why not a northern tier city?'”Hancock told USA TODAY Sports. “‘Why does college football always have to have its championship in the Sun Belt?’ We’re pleased with our decision to go north.”

Lucas Oil Stadium, which will be the host site of the Playoff, is the primary home of the Indianapolis Colts and serves as a neutral site location for the B1G Championship Game every December.

Not many bowl games are held in B1G country, forcing several teams to travel south for postseason play. While that may not be a bad thing for many fans wanting to escape the cold winter weather for a few days, those trips can be a bit of a hindrance in travel for some programs.

There are still several years until the Playoff heads to Indianapolis, but it’s nice to see college football’s national championship is committed to the Midwest.
