College football team won't have fans in attendance for Week 1 due to COVID-19 surge
Fans of the University of Hawai’i’s football team will have to wait longer than expected to see the Warriors play in front of a live crowd at home.
Hawai’i announced that it will not allow fans to attend its home opener against Portland State on Saturday, Sept. 4 because of a surge in COVID-19 concerns. The decision is expected to be re-evaluated in coming weeks.
“We are disappointed because we were looking forward to playing in front of our fans again,” said Hawai’i athletic director David Martin. “However we understand the decision was made in the best interest of public safety and can only hope the restrictions will be lifted when the time is right.”
Because of construction to Aloha Stadium, Hawai’i is playing its home games at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, which seats 9,000.
Hawai’i opens the season on Saturday, Aug. 28, playing a Week 0 game against UCLA on the road.
