Dan Lanning dissects Oregon's trick play on record-setting TD for Dillon Gabriel
Dan Lanning’s Oregon Ducks picked up another win on Saturday, defeating Maryland 39-18. During the 3rd quarter, however, Dillon Gabriel permanently etched his name in the college record books.
The veteran quarterback scored his 179th college touchdown, setting the FBS record for most career TDs. It wasn’t a traditional play call, either, as Gabriel lobbed the ball to wide-open offensive lineman Gernorris Wilson for the score.
After the game, Lanning was asked about choosing that play call.
“We said we liked that play from the 3-yard line in our staff meeting this morning,” explained the coach. “We were at the 3-yard line, I think, so that’s why we ran it.”
The play was operated to perfection and Gabriel surpassed Case Keenum as the all-time FBS TD leader on the play. Gabriel finished with 183 passing yards and 3 TDs in the Week 11 win.
Lanning also praised Wilson for executing the play perfectly:
“You know, I think that’s the cleanest he’s caught that play since we practiced it,” said Lanning. “I was really glad to see him go attack the ball the way he did. Good execution, good throw, so it was good to see it happen.”
Gabriel has had a long and accomplished college career. The QB has played 26 games with UCF, 24 with Oklahoma, and 10 so far with Oregon. Overall, the QB has thrown for 17,713 passing yards and 147 TDs. Gabriel has also rushed for 1,208 yards and 32 TDs in his career and has a receiving touchdown to his credit.
Gabriel’s next game will be against the Wisconsin Badgers in Week 12. The Ducks will look to remain perfect and improve to 11-0 on the season.
