Dan Lanning says motivation is 'overrated' in spite of Oregon's 'Jump Around' usage
Dan Lanning knows how to get Oregon ready for a big game. That has been proven, and the head coach likes to push unique buttons in preparation.
A few weeks ago, it was Oregon leaning into the movie “The Gladiator” to prepare for a trip to Michigan. A rallying cry of “Are you not entertained?” and the thumbs down symbol dominated Oregon’s big win, including a late touchdown in the blowout.
This past weekend, Oregon traveled to Wisconsin and Camp Randall Stadium, the home of the “Jump Around” tradition before the start of the 4th quarter. And, true to form, Lanning used that song all week to prepare his team for the game.
The head coach compared it to Pavlov’s dog and it allowed the Ducks to relish and enjoy the moment before a 10-0 push to win the game. Nevertheless, Lanning said at his Wednesday press conference that motivating tactics are overrated.
Instead, it’s all about the players performing, something Oregon has done all season long:
“I do think it’s important to package information in unique ways,” said Lanning about the various tactics he’s employed. “But ultimately I’d say motivation is overrated. You still have to go out there and perform, and our guys have done a really good job of doing that.”
Now, Oregon will get a chance to rest on a bye week and prepare for the season-ending game against Washington. While the Ducks certainly want to win that game to stay undefeated, Oregon has clinched its spot in the B1G Championship Game, inching ever closer to the College Football Playoff.
