Dan Lanning sees more pros than cons for playing in Big Ten Championship Game
Dan Lanning and his Oregon Ducks have had a fantastic season. The Ducks were the only FBS team to end the regular season with an undefeated record and will now play for the Big Ten Championship against Penn State.
Oregon, like Texas in the SEC and SMU in the ACC, are playing for a conference title in their first season in the conference. With the potential to earn a loss in the championship game, much talk has been had about whether it’s better to not make the game at all. After a Week 14 win over Washington, Lanning explained why he doesn’t buy into that thinking.
“I see a lot more pros than cons,” Lanning told reporters on Sunday. “For us, It’s an opportunity to compete for a championship in a league that’s one of the toughest in college football. You only get so many chances to play games, and I value every one of those … that’s a big positive.”
In Oregon’s case, the Ducks are likely to earn an at-large berth into the College Football Playoff even if they lose to Penn State on Saturday in the Big Ten title game. The Ducks would have little to worry about even with a loss to the Nittany Lions as that would be their only loss.
This will be the 5th all-time meeting between these teams and the Nittany Lions have 3 wins. Conference championship week will be the first meeting between these teams since 1995.
“The timing of college football is chaotic right now,” Lanning explained. “If you can adapt to the challenge, what an opportunity … We don’t mind being active and getting the chance to play for a championship.”
If the Ducks beat the Nittany Lions, it would be the first conference championship for Lanning as a head coach. The Ducks and Nittany Lions will kick off from Indianapolis on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. ET.
