Big news came on Monday, when Jackson State University announced that Deion Sanders would be the next head coach of the football program. Now, the school is making even more headlines after some of the names of staff members have been released.
Joe Cook at WAPT News reported on some of the individuals Sanders will be adding to his staff. And it includes big names like former NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens and defensive lineman Warren Sapp. Below is Sanders’ reported staff:
- Jason Phillips: Offensive coordinator
- Terrell Owens: Wide receivers coach
- Warren Sapp: Defensive line coach
- Dennis Thurman: Defensive coordinator
- Mario Edwards Sr.: Defensive backs coach
However, following Cook’s tweet, Sanders denied that it was true in a social media post:
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG! This is how junk gets started. Not a good way to get started with me. #CoachPrime WOW https://t.co/oybVbOoTSe

“I am truly blessed to be the 21st Head football coach of Jackson State University,” said Sanders, in a press release. “This amazing HBCU has always enjoyed a high level of commitment academically and athletically. It’s my desire to continue this storied tradition and history of JSU and prayerfully bring more national recognition to the athletes, the university, the Sonic Boom of the South, and HBCUs in general. I am TRULY proud to be a part of the JSU Tiger family. ‘I BELIEVE’”
Sanders comes to Jackson State after serving as the offensive coordinator at Trinity Christian School in Texas. This will be his first coaching gig at the collegiate level.
Sanders was a star at both Florida State and in the NFL. He was a two-way player on the field, playing both defensive back and wide receiver during his career.
