Vitale, who turned 83 in June, has dealt with numerous health issues over the last 2 years. In 2021, he was diagnosed with lymphoma and later melanoma. After successful treatment, Vitale made a brief return to broadcasting. He stepped away again, though, on doctor’s orders to rest his vocal cords. Between the absences for cancer treatments and vocal rest, Vitale made only a few broadcasting appearances during the 2021-22 college basketball season.
In February 2022, Vitale had his first surgery in February to treat dysplasia, pre-cancerous growths on the vocal cords.
Hopefully, Vitale is back on ESPN calling the 2022-23 college basketball season.
