In the statement released from the university, a cause of death was not disclosed. However, in a post from Central Catholic on Facebook (his former high school), it was said that Stephens passed away from complications with COVID-19. The school has since amended that post.

“Jamain was such a wonderful student with a smile on his face every time you saw him,” said California University Athletic Director Karen Hjerpe. “His personality was contagious and he made such a positive impact on everyone he met.”

Stephens played in all 32 games of his career at the school from 2017-19, according to the statement.
