A Division III football program located in Indiana has canceled the 2019 season after suffering a 53rd consecutive loss last week.

Earlham College, located in Richmond, Indiana, rounded out the season with a 70-6 loss to Rose-Hulman on Saturday. The loss marked the 53rd straight defeat for the Quakers, a record in Division III football.

Following the conclusion of the 2018 season, the board of trustees believe the lack of success is reason enough to cancel the 2019 campaign.

“Our board of trustees has been looking at football with concern for several years, and we agree that it is time to consider whether or not success on the football field is a goal we should pursue,” said Avis Steward, interim president at Earlham College. “This decision was not made easily or lightly, but I am convinced that it is the right one at this point in the history of the College.”

Earlham’s last win came in October 2013.

The school is planning to reopen the football program for the 2020 season, though there are some stipulations in place. There must be adequate funding for the football program, a “highly qualified” coach must be hired, and there has to be enough players to fill the roster.

For the 2018 season, Earlham had just 42 players.

While Earlham’s losing streak is extremely lengthy, it still doesn’t quite compare to the longest losing streak in college football history. Prairie View A&M (FCS) set the record with 80 straight losses that ranged from 1989-1998.
