Not many head coach are just brought in out of nowhere to lead a college football program. They were typically either a head coach or a coordinator at another school. Knowing this, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg put together a list of the six hottest names at defensive coordinator right now that are likely paving their way to becoming head coaches sooner rather than later.

Here are the six:

  • Alex Grinch, Oklahoma
  • Jim Leonhard, Wisconsin
  • Clark Lea, Notre Dame
  • Danny Gonzales, Arizona State
  • Jeff Hafley, Ohio State
  • Brent Pry, Penn State

Leonhard, Hafley and Pry all help run defenses at Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State, respectively. Notice a theme? Well, gee, the Badgers, Buckeyes and Nittany Lions are all undefeated and their defenses have been phenomenal so far in 2019.

Again, this is how it works in the world of college football.
