Rittenberg had 4 categories that he ranked 1-10: contenders, overachievers, next up, and fast starts. Ryan Day (No. 6), Jim Harbaugh (No. 8), and James Franklin (No. 9) were the only national contenders on his list. The 2 overachievers from the B1G are Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald at No. 2 and Minnesota’s P.J. Fleck at No. 9 according to Rittenberg.

The next up section of his article involved coaches who can win, but have not yet made it to the big time. Kirk Ferentz made No. 3 and Paul Chryst made No. 9 on that list.

Last but not least was Michigan State’s Mel Tucker on Rittenberg’s fast starts section. He came in at No. 4.
