Usually true freshmen linemen are locks to redshirt.

They often lack the size needed to play in the trenches, especially in the B1G. Even the top recruits are likely find themselves sitting out that first year to get bigger.

Nick Bosa and Ben Bredeson must’ve missed that memo.

Both linemen capped off stellar true freshmen seasons that earned them national recognition. They cracked ESPN’s true freshman All-America team, along with Penn State punter Blake Gillikin.

Bosa obviously came to Ohio State as a household name because of older brother, Joey Bosa. But to his credit, the younger brother did plenty to defend the family name. The Ohio State defensive end racked up five sacks in his first season in Columbus, which also earned him B1G All-Freshman honors.

Bredeson, a fellow Under Armour All-American, became a key part of Michigan’s ground game. He rotated in the first half of the season and started the final six games at guard for the nation’s No. 12 scoring offense.

Gillikin also made an immediate impact for a College Football Playoff contender. His 42.1 yards per punt ranked third in the B1G behind only Ohio State’s Cameron Johnston and Michigan’s Kenny Allen.

All three B1G freshmen will have a chance to make statements in New Year’s Six bowl games.
