ESPN updates FPI rankings after Week 1; Oregon and Michigan drop
ESPN updates its Football Power Index (FPI) rankings after every week of college football. Yes, there are still 2 games to be played (USC-LSU and Boston College-Florida State) before Week 1 is officially over, but the rankings have been updated.
The Big Ten had some of its top teams struggle as Oregon and Michigan both had tougher games in Week 1 than expected. The Ducks were up only 17-14 in the fourth quarter against Idaho, an FCSU team they were heavily expected to blow out. The defending national champion Michigan Wolverines also found themselves in a struggle against Fresno State before pulling away in the fourth.
The SEC and the B1G led the way in the FPI rankings, which isn’t a surprise to fans across the country. The SEC had 6 of the top 10 teams, while the B1G has 3 teams. The lone team not from either of those conferences is Notre Dame, who moved up 1 spot to No. 6 after the big win at Texas A&M.
Here’s a look at the current top 25:
- Georgia
- Alabama
- Texas
- Ohio State
- Penn State
- Notre Dame
- Tennessee
- Ole Miss
- Oklahoma
- Oregon
- Miami
- Missouri
- Louisville
- LSU
- Michigan
- Auburn
- Florida State
- Texas A&M
- USC
- Kansas
- UCF
- Kansas State
- Clemson
- Arizona
- Utah
While the FPI is down on the Wolverines now, Michigan has a huge opportunity to make a move as they host the Texas Longhorns. Oregon’s rebound opportunity comes against Boise State in Week 2.
These rankings will change on a weekly basis, so check back in next week to see if any team can overtake Georgia.
