ESPN's FPI predicts 2022 College Football Playoff field
ESPN’s FPI is in the process of predicting the entire 2022 college football season. That includes trying to project the race to the College Football Playoff.
Entering the season, the Football Power Index has 4 clear favorites to advance to the Playoff. That group includes Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia and Clemson. Those 4 teams were also represented as the top 4 teams on the preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

While those teams all have above a 50% chance to make the Playoff, 8 teams were given at least a 10% chance of making the final four. Here are the teams the FPI sees as legitimate contenders in 2022, ranked by odds to make the CFP:
- Ohio State – 82.7%
- Alabama – 79.5%
- Georgia – 75.1%
- Clemson – 57.4%
- Notre Dame – 18.8%
- Texas – 18%
- Michigan – 17.8%
- Oklahoma – 11.4%
It is interesting that Ohio State came away with the best odds to make the Playoff, but part of that has to do with Ohio State’s projections in the B1G. According to the FPI, the Buckeyes have a 73.1% chance to win the conference and a 32.1% chance of finishing the regular season undefeated.
Alabama – the team with the best odds to win the national title – has just a 49.3% chance of winning the SEC. The Crimson Tide are also given a 16.6% chance of running the table in the regular season.
