ESPN’s FPI is an interesting rating system and always provides some nuggets throughout the college football season. The system is also predicting who has a shot to win the B1G Championship in Indianapolis.
According to the Football Power Index, there are 9 B1G teams with at least a 1% chance of winning the conference this year. However, only one team is above 10% and stands as a clear favorite.
That team is Ohio State who checks in at a greater than 70% chance to win the B1G. Michigan was the next closest at just over 8%.
Every other B1G team is below 5% entering the season:
- Ohio State – 73.1%
- Michigan – 8.3%
- Wisconsin – 4.6%
- Nebraska – 3.9%
- Penn State – 3.1%
- Michigan State – 2.3%
- Minnesota – 1.5%
- Iowa – 1.4%
- Purdue – 1.4%
Ohio State had a 4-year run as B1G champs from 2017-20 with a pair of trips to the College Football Playoff. Last season, it was Michigan who knocked off Ohio State in the regular season and captured the B1G.
It will be interesting to see if these projections hold true or if another surprise competitor rises to the top.
