ESPN's FPI predicts outcome of Heartland Trophy showdown
ESPN’s FPI is predicting the Week 7 slate of college football, including a major trophy game and rivalry within the B1G. That game is Iowa vs. Wisconsin as the two sides battle it out for the Heartland Trophy.
The first meeting between the two programs came all the way back in 1894. Since then, the Hawkeyes and Badgers have staged a total of 96 meetings with one of the more tightly contested rivalries in all of college football.
Overall, the Badgers hold a 49-45-2 lead in the all-time meetings. However, Iowa won the last showdown in Iowa City, and neither program has produced a winning streak since Wisconsin’s 4-game winning streak was snapped in 2020.
As for Saturday, the FPI is giving Wisconsin an edge at home with a 66.6% chance of taking down Iowa and reclaiming the trophy. The Badgers are -10 favorites for the game, and fans can head to BetMGM to get in on the action.
The two teams will face off for the early lead in the B1G West. Iowa and Wisconsin are currently the early favorites to win the division, and the rivalry could go a long way to determining the eventual representative in Indy.
One aspect that could factor in heavily to the final outcome of the game is the injury landscape for Iowa. While Kaleb Johnson returned against Purdue, the Hawkeyes will still be without star TE Luke Lachey and starting QB Cade McNamara.
As always, look for the defense on either side to produce a game-changing moment on Saturday, and a big run or two by either team could be the difference.
