ESPN’s FPI is back with its updated look at the odds to reach the College Football Playoff. Week 6 certainly shook things up with a number of upsets around the country.

On Saturday alone, 5 of the top 11 teams on the AP Poll all fell by the wayside. Four of the teams to get upset fell to unranked teams, including Alabama and Tennessee taking losses as top-5 teams.

However, those kinds of disastrous losses do not entirely eliminate programs from CFP contention. In fact, the Crimson Tide are still given a 70% chance of reaching the 12-team Playoff while the Vols are just south of 50%.

As for the programs in the mix at the top, Ohio State and Texas are the only 2 teams given odds north of 80% at this point in the season, and the Buckeyes and Longhorns are both north of 90%. Miami and Georgia (along with the aforementioned Crimson Tide) are the only other programs north of 70%.

Meanwhile, the Group of 5 is going to be represented in the new Playoff, and that race is particularly interesting. Boise State (12th overall) is the current G5 leader in the FPI odds at 44.4% while Army is 2nd in the G5 teams at
20.7%.

Here are the best Playoff odds per the FPI through the first 6 weeks of the season:

  • Ohio State — 91.6%
  • Texas — 90.9%
  • Miami — 76%
  • Georgia — 74.7%
  • Alabama — 70%
  • Oregon — 66%
  • Penn State — 63.1%

  • Indiana — 51.5%
  • Notre Dame — 47.7%
  • Boise State (12th overall) — 44.4%
