Everything that was said during the press conference announcing alliance between B1G, ACC & Pac-12
It’s official the B1G, PAC-12 and ACC have created an alliance for the future in college athletics.
College athletics have changed in a hurry this summer from thanks to name, image and likeness changes, the new transfer rules and Texas and Oklahoma leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. It’s certainly been eventful.
The ACC, B1G and PAC-12 commissioners all talked about the unprecedented waters college athletics is in during a press conference on Tuesday. The presser was called to discus the new alliance between the three leagues.
B1G Commissioner Kevin Warren had this to say about the current state of college athletics and the alliance:
#B1G commissioner Kevin Warren: “There is turbulence right now in college athletics. There are things we need to address. We need to have strong leadership. We need to work together.” Also mentions need to work with leagues outside of this alliance.

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips and PAC-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff added this:
#GoACC commissioner Jim Phillips: “Our discussions centered on the unprecedented environment in college athletics today and how we could best, together, address the challenges ahead.” Mentions Alston ruling, NIL and other events over the summer.

#Pac12 commissioner George Kliavkoff: “The foundation of college sports is, in many ways, in turmoil.” Says this is a chance to “hit the reset button, come together and make a positive difference in the future of college sports.”

Although all three conferences have decided to form an alliance, no signed document confirmed the alliance more of a gentlemen’s agreement:
Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff on the Alliance: “There is no signed contract. There was an agreement among three gentlemen and a commitment from 41 presidents and chancellors. … There is no signed document and there doesn’t need to be.

There is no timetable into when this alliance between the three conferences would begin:
What’s the timeline for this alliance to take shape? Commissioners keep saying it’s a matter of whenever it’s “practical.”
“This is not about getting out of contracts and blowing anything up,” Kevin Warren says. So, PSU football has an opening in 2025 and an opening in 2027.

Here is the rest of what all three commissioners said during today’s press conference:
Now, we pivot to The Alliance Zoom, where Kevin Warren has just thanked all involved parties for “working together” and “being honest with one another.” In case you’re curious who they’re painting as the villain.

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips says scheduling alliance will “elevate our national profile” with games coast to coast. Says alliance helps “create a degree of certainty in an environment that has become increasingly unstable.”

#B1G‘s Kevin Warren says he’s a “big believer” in expanding CFP, but adds that they “need to do our homework” and gather feedback in methodically assessing whether the proposal is the right path forward.

Alliance commissioners basically now on record as not supporting an expanded 12-team playoff as proposed. “Issues at the margins,” Kliavkoff. “Haven’t made a final decision,” Phillips. “Big believer in being methodical,” Warren.

“We did the alliance to protect the collegiate model,” Kliavkoff

These same commissioners (plus SEC) will be the ones who will decide the fate of the Big 12 when it comes time to decide CFP revenue split. That will define the Big 12’s future.

Kevin Warren says SEC adding Texas/OU allowed everyone in college athletics to assess where things are going in the sport. ” I wouldn’t say this is a reaction to Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC, but you have to evaluate what’s going on in the landscape of college athletics.”
