A Texas high school has decided to overlook the ugly history of Art Briles and has hired him to lead the school’s football program.

On Friday night, Mt. Vernon Independent School District (ISD) announced that Briles will be the head coach of the high school football team. The announcement comes three years after Briles was fired by Baylor amid sexual assault scandals involving the football program.

“We are pleased to welcome Coach Briles back home to Texas,” superintendent Jason McCullough said in a statement. “He brings with him a wealth of not only football experience but also life experience. He is passionate about investing in the lives of young people and helping them to succeed both on the field and in life. After a thorough due diligence process and several earnest conversations, we believe our students will benefit greatly from his skills and experience.”

Briles spent 20 years coaching high school football in the state of Texas before taking over Baylor, and had a very successful resumé, winning four national titles. Still, considering the allegations and circumstances that surrounded Briles’ firing, it’s surprising that a high school would hire him to be the face of the football team.

In 2018, Briles coached a team in Florence, Italy.

Briles first became a head coach at the college level in 2003, taking over at Houston. In five seasons with the Cougars, Briles compiled a 34-28 record and appeared in four bowl games. He then jumped to Baylor in 2008, where he unprecedented success in an eight-year run with the school.

The Bears had a 65-37 record under Briles and made six postseason appearances. Baylor won 10 games in four of his final five seasons and won back-to-back Big 12 titles in 2013 and 2014.

Briles was fired in May 2016 after an external investigation determined that the head coach had mishandled sexual assault situations involving members of the football team for several years. The investigation found that at least 17 women were assaulted by 19 football players.

Briles claims he was not involved in any cover ups.
