Florida Atlantic University is going to honor former head coach Howard Schnellenberger with a jersey patch and a helmet decal this season.

The announcement first came via Action Network’s Brett McMurphy on Thursday afternoon.

On the jersey patch, the words read, “To believe is to be strong” and it also has his year of birth and passing.

Schnellenberger was a head coach for 24 years, and 8 of them were for FAU. He took over the program in 2004 and coached the Owls through 2011. His best season came in his inaugural season at FAU as he guided them to a 9-3 record. He also won 2 bowl games (New Orleans Bowl in 2007 and Motor City Bowl in 2008) while he was the head coach at FAU.

In 97 overall games as the head man there, Schnellenberger finished with a 41-56 record.

Before coming to FAU, he coached Miami, (where he won the Orange Bowl and National Championship in 1983), Louisville, and Oklahoma. In 277 overall games as a head coach, his record was 141-133.
