In one week, the first FBS game of the 2020 season will be played. Hopefully.
On Thursday, Sept. 3, the first game featuring two FBS squads is scheduled, as South Alabama and Southern Miss will go head to head. Kickoff comes a few days after the first Division I college football game of the season, with FCS teams Central Arkansas and Austin Peay squaring off.
The South Alabama-Southern Miss showdown will air on CBS Sports Network on Thursday night, with a 9 p.m. ET start time. South Alabama plays in the Sun Belt Conference while Southern Miss is a member of Conference USA. Both leagues are part of the six at the FBS level still moving forward with a fall football schedule.
South Alabama ended last season with a 2-10 record. Head coach Steve Campbell is entering his third year with the Jaguars.
Southern Miss finished the 2019 campaign with a 7-6 record, which included an appearance in the Armed Forces Bowl. The Golden Eagles are coached by Jay Hopson, who is in his fifth season with the program.
Thursday’s matchup will mark the first-ever meeting between South Alabama and Southern Miss on the gridiron.
