A former B1G QB and GA has been promoted to offensive coordinator in Akron.

Billy Fessler, who was a QB at Penn State and a GA at Ohio State, was promoted to offensive coordinator in his second year with the Zips. Fessler was named one of the Top-30 Coaches Under 30 by 247Sports as a graduate assistant at Ohio State.

Akron marks Fessler’s third assignment with head coach Joe Moorhead. Moorhead was the offensive coordinator for the Nittany Lions during Fessler’s college career. In 2019, the pair reunited when Fessler became a member of Moorehead’s Mississippi State staff. Moorehead once again targeted Fessler for the QB’s coach position after he was announced as the new head coach in Akron in 2020.

In Moorhead and Fessler’s first year, the Zips finished a disappointing 2-10, dead last in the MAC. One of the Zips’ two wins came against St. Francis PA in the opener, and was decided in overtime. Akron had to wait until the end of the season for their second win, a 44-12 route of Northern Illinois in the 11th game of the regular season.
