The NFL’s roughing the passer rule has been harsh scrutiny and criticism early this season. And it’s not just the fans that hate it. Players are beginning to express their frustration over the new rule as well.

Some of the games biggest stars, like Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, are beginning to publicly address the matter.

After another weekend filled with questionable calls surrounding the new rule, Watt took to Twitter to slam the NFL and its new rule. And his message was pretty well-received by football fans across the country.

“Roughing the passer calls are absolutely out of control,” Watt wrote on Twitter.

Watt wasn’t alone in his sentiment.

Green Bay Packers defensive star Clay Matthews is also frustrated with the new rule. After being penalized for a hit on Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith that appeared pretty routine, Matthews called the league “soft” for the direction it’s headed.

“Unfortunately this league is going in a direction I think a lot of people don’t like,” Matthews said. “I think they’re getting soft. The only thing hard about this league is the fines they levy down on guys like me who play the game hard.”

The new roughing the passer rule has been heavily criticized since the start of the preseason. No rule changes are likely to come this season, but could the NFL re-evaluate the rule before the 2019 season begins?

If enough players complains and televisions turn the channel, it may have to seriously reconsider the rule.
