Tennessee State football player Christion Abercrombie is in bad shape after collapsing on the sideline of this past weekend’s game against Vanderbilt.

Abercrombie suffered a head injury in the 31-27 loss to the Commodores. The injury was sustained during a play that was apparently routine, according to Mike Organ of The Tennessean:

“It was just a football play,” TSU coach Rod Reed said Sunday morning on his coaches radio show on WNSR. “He was taking on a block and it wasn’t anything malicious or dirty or anything like that. Just an unfortunate situation.”

The linebacker came to the sideline late in the second quarter and ended up collapsing. He was given oxygen on the sideline and then taken out on a stretcher.

He now remains in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after undergoing emergency surgery. The school provided updates via his coach and his family. No new medical information is known, though it does sound like the linebacker is in goods hands and surrounded by family and friends.
