A B1G West program could get a bit of a roster boost in the next few days, as former Miami (FL) defensive back Derrick Smith will soon be making an announcement on his transfer destination.

Smith, who was a member of the 2017 recruiting class and committed initially to the Hurricanes, decided to transfer out before the 2019 season. He’s narrowed his list of landing spots down to four.

Illinois and Nebraska are the two B1G teams are still in the running. Smith is also considering Texas and Florida.

On Saturday, Smith tweeted out that a “Decision [is] being made next week.”

Smith, a native of Orange Park, Florida, was a three-star safety out of high school. He was one of the top 150 players out of his home state and was in the top 1000 nationally.

Smith spent two seasons with the Hurricanes, appearing in 24 career games. He made 24 stops and 1.5 tackles for loss in his freshman and sophomore campaigns. Smith’s best performance came in the ACC Championship Game in 2017, registering six tackles against Clemson in a 38-3 loss.
