Former Miami football player pleads not guilty to teammate's 2006 murder
Rashaun Jones has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Bryan Pata in 2006.
Jones was arrested and charged with 2nd-degree murder in August after he was long suspected in the death of Pata 15 years ago. Pata was shot to death outside his apartment in November of that year and it had become one of South Florida’s most notorious unsolved murder cases.
According to ESPN, an attorney for Jones entered the plea during a court hearing after prosecutors filed the charges against him.
ESPN also reports that Jones was originally arrested on a 1st-degree murder charge and he could still face that charge, though they’d have to present it to a grand jury first.
Pata was 22-years-old at the time of his dead. He was expected to be an NFL Draft selection.
No further details have been released at this time.
