Elliott played collegiate football at both Purdue and Michigan as a running back. He was then an assistant coach for 11 years before becoming the Wolverines’ head coach from 1959-68. He went on to become Michigan’s associate athletic director from 1969-70.
Elliott moved on from Michigan to go back to Iowa as the official athletic director from 1970-91. During his tenure, Iowa’s teams won 11 NCAA titles.
“I know what it’s like to be an athletic director. I know you make decisions and people get mad at you,” said current Iowa AD Gary Barta. “I’ve never met anybody that was mad at Bump Elliott. He was a gentleman and a wonderful representative of college athletics, And he will be missed.”
