Mike Leach’s impact reaches a lot deeper than just college football. Fox Sports analysts Chris Peterson, Emmanuel Acho, and Mike Hill all had some kind words to say about “The Pirate”.

Peterson coached against Leach while at Washington. The two competed in the annual in-state rivalry while Leach was at Washington State that is known as the Apple Cup. Peterson talked about how deep Leach’s influence was.

“He was probably the most impactful guy in my lifetime football-wise. His influence is all the way down to our colleague Bruce Feldman’s eight year old flag pewee football team to the NFL. You’d always leave the conversation smiling, laughing, and somewhat bewildered.”

Hill mentioned how incredible Leach’s coaching tree is. Names like Lincoln Riley, Kliff Kingsbury, and Josh Heupel are just some of the people to have learned under Leach.

“He’s leaving a great legacy,” said Hill. “You look at his coaching tree, it’s very impressive. Lincoln Riley, Kliff Kingsbury, and Josh Heupel. The list goes on.”

Acho actually got to play against Leach. Leach coached Texas Tech while Acho played for Texas. Acho stated that Leach was the best offensive mind the former Texas LB ever played against.

“Mike Leach was a savant,” said Acho. “You could never actually outsmart Mike Leach. Out of all the brilliant offensive minds, brilliant offensive coaches I played against, Leach was the best.”
