Twelve appears to be the number of the week.

On Tuesday morning, Yahoo’s Pete Thamel reported that there’s a lot of momentum building for a 12-team field in the College Football Playoff, should it expand past four teams. While there are now guarantees, 12 appears to be the favorite number right now.

FOX college football analyst Joel Klatt is also a fan of that number.

Speaking with RJ Young on The No. 1 Ranked Show on Monday, Klatt talked about why he thinks 12 is a great expansion number of the College Football Playoff. He also explained how he would set up the format.

“In my Playoff model, we’d be giving the top Group of 5 team an automatic bid. I think probably 12 is the right number. I think 12 is the right number,” Klatt said on the podcast.

Klatt said that while he’d like to see at least one Group of 5 team in the field, he doesn’t believe all 10 conferences should get automatic qualifier spots. He says each Power 5 conference champion and the best G5 team should be in. The rest would be left up to the committee.

“I think the Group of 5 should be represented, there’s no doubt in my mind,” Klatt said. “I think that would be great for the Group of 5. I just don’t want to give all 10 of them automatic bids. I think that would water everything down.”

The four-team format has been under scrutiny for several seasons now, but this is the first offseason in which there’s real momentum towards a change. How quickly it happens, and what the number will be if expanded, all remains up in the air.
