Greg McElroy named the first-year head coach who is most likely to succeed this past week on Always College Football.
There’s a few coaches in the conference to choose from, but McElroy’s pick in new Nebraska HC Matt Rhule, who has rebuilt the hype surrounding Nebraska football with determination. The Huskers are recruiting better and have found some solid gets in the transfer portal to revamp a team that was horribly underwhelming last season.
See what McElroy has to say about Rhule and the new-look Huskers below:
“I think Matt Rhule has already won over the faithful. I think his quarterback has a chance to be a significant difference maker,” McElroy said. “I also think he’s the type of guy you just never bet against. Matt Rhule is a star. And would expect him to do impressive things.”

The right pick?
It’s important to set some boundaries when predicting the top newcomer in the conference. For one: What defines success at Nebraska in 2023?
The Huskers finished 4-8 last season, but lost several games in agonizing fashion, down at or less than 7 points by final horn. In my opinion, that should be the Huskers’ ultimate goal in 2023: Win some of the tossups and reach a bowl game.
There’s not a sane soul on the planet who is asking for 9/10 wins in Year 1 under Rhule. Rome wasn’t built in a day. A massive step forward for the Huskers would be 6/7 wins, definitely a possibility with swing games at Minnesota, at Colorado, at Michigan State and vs. Maryland.
Win at least 2 of those and the Huskers are in business.
