Heather Dinich, Paul Finebaum share Playoff implications this week for Penn State, Ohio State
One of the biggest rivalries in college football takes place this weekend, but this year the game has far more implications than just bragging rights.
Penn State and Ohio State face off on Saturday in a game that will have major College Football Playoff implications. Both teams come into the game undefeated, and a win for either side would do wonders in terms of getting them to the CFP.
On Wednesday, Heather Dinich and Paul Finebaum discussed the Playoff implications for the matchup.
Dinich believes the game isn’t necessarily a must-win yet. Both teams have solid resumes with the chance to get another signature win if they don’t win on Saturday. But Dinich does believe that if one team needs this win more than the other, it’s Penn State.
“It’s obviously a critical game, but I would not describe it as a must-win quite yet,” Dinich said on ESPN’s Get Up. “I’ll remind everyone that last year Ohio State finished in the top 4 without winning the Big Ten East division for 2 big reasons. One, their win against Notre Dame, which they also have this year, which continues to resonate with the selection committee. And 2, because of their win against Penn State. I would say that Penn State needs this win more because their non-conference wins have come against West Virginia, UMass and Delaware. So this is a big one for James Franklin.”
Finebaum believes that whichever team loses still has a chance to make the CFP with a win over Michigan, which is emerging as one of the favorites to make the CFP.
“If Penn State were to lose this game, they still see Michigan later on and for Ohio State, a win against Michigan, they have 2 shots against Michigan, that could really change the dynamics,” Finebaum said. “Because Michigan at some point is going to be 2 or 3 in the country according to the CFP, so that would be one of the most significant wins in the country. So as big a game as this is, both schools can survive a loss.”
Either way, the game will be a big one. Last season, Penn State lost the game, ultimately ending its CFP hopes with a loss to Michigan already on the schedule.
The Nittany Lions are looking avenge that loss last year and find their way into their first CFP.
