The top 4 on my Heisman board shuffled this week, but the names didn’t change. Below, you’ll find Miami’s Cam Ward, Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, and Colorado’s Travis Hunter.

Last week, I wrote in this piece that the Heisman race had essentially become a 4-horse race in the eyes of the betting markets. And that’s still mostly true. The top 4 names on the board at FanDuel all have +500 or shorter odds. The fifth name on FanDuel’s board has +1700 odds.

Ward has an unbeaten team and a marvelous statistical profile. Jeanty is the best running back in the country, feasting on defenses every week. Gabriel is leading the best team in the country. Hunter has a résumé no other player can match.

After throwing for 5 touchdowns against Duke, Ward takes over the top spot for me this week. The decision is twofold.

First, Jeanty, my previous and longtime No. 1, has now fallen well off the pace to match or break Barry Sanders’ rushing record. And breaking that record is probably the only way Jeanty actually wins the award.

Second, Ward is playing lights out as Miami enters November. Duke led 28-17 with 10 minutes to play in the third quarter on Saturday. Ward converted a 2-point play with his legs in the third quarter, then had touchdown throws of 49 and 66 yards in the fourth quarter to propel a 36-3 run to close out the final 25 minutes of the game.

But you’ll probably notice something else about the top of the board below.

No one from the SEC rests in the top 4.

The SEC has sent at least one player to New York City as a finalist every year since 2018. An SEC player has been named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 16 of the last 18 years. Will the league really be left out this winter?

In the 5-10 spots, I have 4 SEC players.

All 4 of those players have at least 1 game on their team’s respective schedules in November that could catapult them toward the top. Jaxson Dart will face Georgia on Saturday and he’ll play in The Swamp on Nov. 23. Jalen Milroe plays at LSU in Week 11 and still has the Iron Bowl. Dylan Sampson has road games at Georgia and Vanderbilt. Garrett Nussmeier plays Alabama on Saturday and then plays at Florida the following weekend.

Sampson’s team can play for the SEC title. Nussmeier’s team could, too. Alabama and Ole Miss need help, but they aren’t technically out of it.

Dart leads the nation in passing. Sampson broke what was nearly a century-old program record with his 18th and 19th rushing touchdowns of the season in Week 10, and he’s only 1 behind Jeanty for the FBS lead. Milroe has 25 total touchdowns.

Could anyone from the bunch break into that top 4? I’d argue the SEC schedule in the final month of the regular season provides an opportunity for each of them.

For now, here’s the updated Heisman Trophy race entering Week 11.
