A high school football player from New York has died after sustaining an injury during a team-building drill.
Joshua Mieto, a 16-year-old from Sachem East High School, was killed after being struck in the head by a log he and a teammate were carrying as part of a drill. The team was participating in an exercise camp that took place before the start of team practices could officially begin.
The log was 12-foot long and had the resemblance of a utility pole.
Carlin Schledorn, a Sachem East alumnus, spoke with the Associated Press about the drill, which was inspired by the Navy SEALs.
“It’s very big. It’s like a tree, and it’s a challenge for people who weightlift,” Scledorn said. “Five or six people do it at once. I feel horrific for the team and coaches because I know them and they are all great men.”
Mileto was a junior at Sachem East. Nobody from school has commented on the incident.
