Illinois defeated Nebraska in overtime on Friday night in Lincoln.

The Fighting Illini had a chance to win the game in regulation, but ultimately came up short of reaching field goal range in the in the final minute of the 4th quarter. However, Illinois was able to find the end zone in just 2 plays to begin over time thanks to Luke Altmyer’s fourth touchdown pass of the night.

After Illinois took a 31-24 lead, it was time for Dylan Raiola and the Huskers to respond. The drive started with a false start penalty and things went downhill from there. Over the next 3 plays, Illinois registered 2 sacks and forced a costly intentional grounding penalty.

Both quarterbacks were excellent in this game, but Altmyer proved to be a sensational game manager for the Illini. He completed 21-of-27 passes for 215 yards, 4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He made plays with his feet as well and did very well moving within the pocket.

Raiola was good overall, but did struggle in the 4th quarter and overtime. He fumbled twice, took multiple sacks and missed an open receiver in the 4th quarter that would have put the Huskers up by 7. Instead, Nebraska settled for a field goal — which it missed. Overall, Raiola threw for 284 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception on the night.

Nebraska has now lost 25 consecutive games against ranked competition.

Illinois is now poised to move up in the polls this week after picking up a top-25 road win. The Fighting Illini haven’t been ranked in the top 20 since the 2022 season.
