Is Alabama a CFB Playoff lock? Danny Kanell says that’s not the case if Crimson Tide lose

It’s hard to imagine a situation in which Alabama doesn’t reach the College Football Playoff.

Most of the conversation this week swirling around the Crimson Tide has been about whether or not they’ve done enough this season to earn a spot in a national semifinal game, regardless of outcome in the SEC Championship Game. Even with a loss to Georgia, Alabama is considered a contender for one of the four spots.

Should that be the case, though? Has Alabama been so dominant that it belongs in the four-team field even if it drops a game to the Bulldogs?

College football expert Danny Kanell doesn’t believe that should be the case.

“The regular season is done,” Kanell said on Twitter. “We are in the POST season. If you lose in the POST season your season is over.”

Kanell makes a strong point, especially with a logjam in the top six spots. Oklahoma and Ohio State — assuming they win Saturday — would also be strong candidates for the fourth spot.

Alabama could make life easy for everyone by just defeating Georgia on in the SEC Championship Game. If the Bulldogs pull off the upset, things could get really interesting on Sunday.
