Report: Jackson State commit killed in shooting in Dallas

Jackson State commit Leroy Hawkins III was killed in a shooting near Dallas on Tuesday, according to a report from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

According to the report, Hawkins was shot and killed during an incident in Dallas this week. Hawkins graduated from high school last week and was just 17 years old. Kenaijae Keon Anderson, an 18-year-old was arrested after confessing to the shooting.

Hawkins signed a National Letter of Intent to play college football to play at Jackson State, an FCS program in Mississippi.

“Leroy Hawkins was a very special young man,” Jackson State head coach John Hendrick said. “We will keep Leroy and his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.”

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Leroy Hawkins,” said Jackson State athletic director Ashley Robinson. “Leroy was a tremendous son, athlete, student and friend, and he will be sorely missed. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
