Every coach seems to share unique thoughts on whether or not the College Football Playoff should expand past four teams. That’s particularly true for Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.

The most typical response from a coach that wants expansion is to move to eight teams. Even that type of expansion can be tricky because everyone has different ideas on how to fill those eight spots — automatic Power 5 bids, playoff committee choosing a few of the teams, Group 5 champions, etc.

But Harbaugh has his very own unique proposal for playoff expansion, which is filled with automatic bids, bye weeks, the BCS system and elimination of conference championship games.

“I came up with my own (playoff) structure,” Harbaugh said this past spring according to ESPN. “I can take a picture of it and send it to you (he said to ESPN).”

In Harbaugh’s plan, 11 teams would make the playoffs, and they’d start with the lowest six seeds playing three games on the first Saturday of December. Those teams would be determined by a BCS computer.

The Top 5 teams would receive byes and be composed of conference champions. Last year, the Top 5 teams in Harbaugh’s system would have been Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Ohio State. Washington would have been the Pac-12 automatic bid and ranked No. 6.

Teams 7-11, again, determined by a computer, are the best of the rest and includes a Group 5 team.

In this system, there are four playoff rounds, but Harbaugh isn’t suggesting eliminating bowl games. The teams eliminated on Dec. 1 would then play in a more traditional bowl game.

Confused yet? Yeah, Harbaugh’s system sounds interesting but complicated, and the last thing college football needs is to lose its casual fans who normally tune in to conference title games to avoid the sport that weekend because they’re unclear how the playoff bracket works.

But at least Harbaugh is thinking. While the four-team system is an upgrade, somehow expanding to eight or more would seemingly benefit the sport if the right format came to fruition.
